The list of procedures listed in the Mastering Emergency Medicine Book can be asked to be performed on a patient in part or full, or at the same time may be asked as a teaching station.
If its a teaching station, we always have to follow the same proforma:
Introduction to the student
Asking his name and designation
Asking why he is here?
He will respond as to know more about a procedure
Then, ascertain his level of knowledge about the procedure
Ask him what kind of patients he sees?
Outline the objectives:
Indications
Steps: Consent, Universal Precautions, PPEs, Preparation of equipment and positioning the patient, Going through the procedure, aftercare.
Discuss complications
Encourage questions
Provide follow up plan and give reading materials
If you are doing the procedure on the patient (mannequin) in front of the student, seek consent from patient for the procedure in itself and also for allowing the student to observe while you do it.
Reassess the patient and tell him about after care.
Thank the patient.
