The MCEM part C often has stations dealing with scenarios in which the examinee is tested on his teaching abilities, This not only allows the CEM to test the examinee's clinical knowledge and/or skill, but also his communication and teaching skills. However, it may also be presented as station in which the examinee will be asked to teach a skill to the patient (i.e.; Use of a Nebulizer). No matter the scenario, the steps involved in teaching remains the same.
The likely scenarios could be:
Teaching a Student/Nurse to:
1 Use an Otoscope
2 Use an Ophthalmoscope
3 Applying a Thomas Splint
4 Handwashing technique
5 Suturing a wound
6 ABG Analysis
7 EKG interpretation
8 Insertion of NG Tube
9 Insertion of a Foley Catheter
Teaching a patient:
1 Use of Nebulizer
Steps:
1 Introduce yourself and your role
2 Ascertain the role of the student
3 Ascertain the level of understanding of the student about the procedure
4 Outline objectives: Indications, components, interpreting/procedure, applying the knowledge at bedside
5 Obtain consent from patient for procedure AND for allowing the student to observe you while you perform
6 Allow the student to practice hands on and verbally go over the process
7 Correct them if required
8 Be non judgmental and do not shower them with questions
9 Positive reinforcement and Appreciation
10 Recap
11 Ask concerns/questions
12 Schedule a Follow Up
13 Offer materials to go over.
